BDO’s Free Spoken English and Career Guidance Classes in Kandhamal in 2025

In a remarkable initiative to uplift the youth of Kandhamal district, the Block Development Officer (BDO), Shubha Dattatreya Bahinipati, has taken on the role of a mentor by conducting free spoken English courses and career guidance classes for local students. This unique effort goes beyond the routine administrative duties of a BDO and aims to equip students with essential skills that can transform their academic and professional lives. Since April 2, 2025, these evening classes have been held daily at the Panchayat Samiti office’s conference hall, providing a much-needed platform for students to improve their communication skills and gain clarity on career opportunities.

About the BDO’s Free Spoken English

Berhampur: In a wonderful effort to support local students, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kandhamal district, Shubha Dattatreya Bahinipati, has started free evening classes for school children. This initiative goes beyond his usual administrative duties. Since April 2, he has been holding daily sessions from 6 to 7 pm at the Panchayat Samiti office’s conference hall.

The summer camp focuses on career guidance, spoken English, and preparation for national competitive exams. Bahinipati, a former software engineer who later joined the Odisha Administrative Service, points out that many students in the area don’t even know about important exams like the civil services. “How can they compete if they don’t know these opportunities exist?” he asks.

Currently, about 20 students from classes 6 to 10 attend the sessions. More students are expected to join after the Makar Sankranti festival on April 14.

The classes cover career counseling, general knowledge, personality development, and spoken English. Encouraged by the positive response, Bahinipati plans to continue the program beyond summer and include college students and exam aspirants as well. “We will hire professional teachers in the future. For now, I am conducting the sessions myself. When I am not available, a local volunteer helps continue the practice,” he said. Bahinipati is also the author of AI for All, a Beginner’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence.

This initiative is helping students improve their English and understand career options better, giving them a chance to build a brighter future.
